The West Estudillo Historic Downtown Improvement Project
is a recipient of an ASLA/NCC Design Award for 2007.
The design intent was to provide a strong pedestrian
link from the BART Station and the Central Downtown
Shopping District, to enhance the underutilized plaza,
and to unify the site under a common architectural identity.
Inspired by the historic Casa Peralta entry façade
(above right), Golden Associates has designed a series
of site improvements that create a unique sense of place.
The three key areas are the West Estudillo
Streetscape, the Pedestrian Corridor
between two existing commercial buildings and the Historic
Washington Plaza.
The comprehensive design contributes to the urban experience
of walking, shopping and accessing public transportation,
as well as, reflects San Leandro’s rich architectural
heritage. This project provides the community with a
bridge to the past, an educational glimpse into its
heritage and a sense of pride in their community.
“Golden Associates provided the creative
solutions for our downtown revitalization. Their work
will be key to improving our City and making downtown
the pleasing, pedestrian experience it should be.”
- San Leandro’s municipal staff.
